How RFDS Victoria's digital health strategy can help ensure better health outcomes for our patients.

In line with our digital health strategy, RFDS Victoria is developing a new digital ecosystem, called My Flying Doctor.

The purpose of My Flying Doctor is to establish an integrated model of care that actively improves the health of our communities.

To understand what this will mean in reality for our patients, let's meet Barbara.

Barbara is 76, and lives in rural Victoria. She has been feeling unusually thirsty and fatigued lately, and her vision has become blurry. Concerned, Barbara decides to consult a doctor.

Using the My Flying Doctor app, Barbara books an appointment with the Flying Doctor Rural Women's GP service, which visits her community.

Following this appointment, Barbara is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Using My Flying Doctor, the GP writes Barbara an e-Prescription for Metformin, meaning Barbara doesn't have to worry about losing the paper script.

The GP also refers Barbara electronically to the Flying Doctor Mobile Eye Care team, and an endocrinologist who is partnered with the Flying Doctor Specialist Telehealth service.

All of this is recorded and organised in Barbara's electronic medical record in the My Flying Doctor app. Additionally, Barbara's Medicare claim is also available in her account, with her clinical information uploaded to My Health Record.

Later that day, Barbara books an appointment with Flying Doctor Mobile Eye Care and the Flying Doctor Specialist Telehealth service via My Flying Doctor. Because of her concerns about her eyesight, she also books a journey with Flying Doctor Community Transport to have a volunteer driver take her to her appointment with our optometrist.

As soon as her appointment is booked with Mobile Eye Care, our optometrist has Barbara's e-Referral and electronic medial record. Following the consultation, our optometrist's findings are added to Barbara's medical record. Instantly, Barbara's GP is made aware of this new information.

A few days later, Barbara has her first consultation with the Flying Doctor endocrinologist. This appointment takes place using the Flying Doctor Specialist Telehealth service, which means that Barbara can attend the appointment at home, rather than driving seven hours to the endocrinologist's practice.

The endocrinologist assigns Barbara to the My Flying Doctor Remote Monitoring Program. Now, Barbara simply enters her blood sugar levels into her phone every day, and the information is automatically uploaded into her electronic medical record. This way, Barbara can rest assured that if there is a problem with her insulin levels, her GP and endocrinologsit will be automatically informed.

Barbara is also comforted by the knowledge that any time she needs help, she can simply call the Flying Doctor Client Care team, who, using My Flying Doctor, can book any necessary appointments or transports for her.

In short: My Flying Doctor aims to put people - not technology - at the heart of our digital health strategy.
